It’s been a while since I last posted, and one of the reasons is that I haven’t had anything to post about. My fall was lackluster as far as catching fish goes. The sand bass and striper run was not what it was last year, and while I caught a handful of nice size stripers, I never caught the big numbers that I was expecting. Also, I had a hard time syncing fishing time with favorable water generation schedules, so I didn’t get to fish nearly as much as I did last year. It was just plain tough for me!
The one bit of great news is that I’ve started a new job. For the last few years I have been selling shoes for Dillard’s, and through that job I met several sales people at Don Thornton Lexus. They approached me about working with their new Volkswagen dealership. Apparently the former owners of the dealership were not known for service and because of that the new owners are putting a new face on the place, and I am part of the new face!
I’ve been at the job only for a few weeks so the majority of my time has been studying up on all the different features that Volkswagen offers. Now, most of the people that come in to look at cars are not fishermen, so they don't see the features through a fisherman's eyes.
The car and options that impress me most are the ones that cater to my obsession with fishing. I am not a sports car kind of guy. Don’t get me wrong, I love the looks and technology in the high end cars, but I’m not sure I want to put nasty waders and tackle in them. Also, I'm not sure a canoe is going to work on top of a luxury car.
The car that that I like is the Jetta TDI. First let me start with the center pass through from the trunk in the passenger compartment. This will allow for a 9ft fly rod to be put in the car without having to break it down. I love this! I fish some urban areas where I will pick up pretty quickly and rush to another place. I can run in to a QT to get a Coke and not have to worry about the rod on the outside of the car, and then, when I show up at the next spot I can just pull the rod out and go. No rigging, no fiddling around- just business.
This car has leatherette seats and comes with monster mats (big thick rubber mats). This is perfect for me because if I am running from one spot to the next in my car there is no need to remove my waders or wading boots to drive. The seats can handle wet waders with out messing them up. With the mats, who cares if I drag dirt and mud in the car? I can just hose those suckers off. Also, I have cleats on the bottom of my boots, and these mats should hold up fine.
I wish I had a Jetta TDI. Maybe someday...
