Toad on a Log

I love spring.  It's nice to get outside and just hang out.  Also the fishing is good too.

Cheap 8wt.

I have an old 8/9 wt rod that I have been wanting to go and fish with, but the line on the rod was in awful shape.  I put the word out that I was looking for some new line and my buddy Pat came to the rescue.  He spotted some cheap 8wt line in a tackle shop in Claremore Ok. and quickly scooped it up for me.  It only cost $10,  and I figured for 10 bucks how could I go wrong.  I strung up the rod and it casts great!   My morning consisted of getting to fling an old rod that felt new and catching a handful of these little guys.

Popper Test

The other evening I snuck out for about an hour to cast for sand bass.  I have been catching them on little Clouser minnows with a fairly slow retrieve.   After I caught a few fish I decided to try one of my new poppers just to see how they look in the water.  I guess they look okay.

First Batch of Poppers

I picked up some foam bobbers the other day and started carving them up into poppers.  I got so excited with the results that I went out and got some balsa wood and carved that up too.  Got so excited with balsa I thought I would try cork so I headed to the liquor store to buy a few bottles of wine. There is definitely an advantage to using cork! Here are some of the results from the first experiments.  More to come.

Day Dreaming

I was day dreaming about fishing for sand bass in the spring and decided to start getting ready, so I slabbed craft fur on some hooks, colored them up with markers and put sparkly fabric paint on them to look somewhat like bait fish.  They are not pretty but I have to say that flinging bait fish patterns is my favorite way of fooling a fish.  They're easy to tie and easy to fish.

Scraggly Fly

This little scraggly fly actually caught some fish!  Not very many but it fooled a few.
